History of Cornhole

cornhole layout

If anybody tells you they know the history of cornhole, they would be lying. The game of cornhole, bag toss, corntoss, any many other names has taken on different versions and stories throughout the years. Most believe it originated from Ohio, but others will tell you cornhole was started by a German farmer. Whatever the case may be, here are some different versions that we've have seen from trying to research it ourselves. Also if you have some versions that you know of, please share and we would be more than happy to post it.

1. Bag Toss game was created in Cincinnati, Ohio
"Cincinnati is the true place where the cornhole game was started." This is all you will hear when traveling through Ohio. It is said that the game actually was created on the west part of town and has been sweeping across the Midwest. This would be the most common form of story you will find online and seems to be what most people believe on how bag toss was formed.

2. Cornhole game was created by a German Farmer
In this story, A german named Matthias Kueperman started the game of cornhole / bag toss. It was sometime in the year 1325 while he was walking around and noticed some kids tossing some ricks into a hole that was in the ground. He found this very unsafe and decided to create a safer game around this concept and thus cornhole was formed. The story continues that once the Germans started migrating to the U.S. they brought the game with them. Now Cincinnati is known for its German roots so the first story could hold true at least with how the bag toss game started in the U.S.

3. Cornhole game was started in Kentucky
This story is very similar to Cincinatti, but used in the context of being from the Foothills of Kentucky. Once again, it keeps the same idea around the game starting in the midwest.

4. Bag Toss game was started in Ancient Civilization
This story is similar to the German Farmer where tribes would toss rocks at holes in the ground. Obviously you can't dispute this story as there is no way one could, but this could have been the first time something even close to the current game of cornhole was started.

However the game was started, it is growing in popularity each and every day. Hopefully this has given you your own idea on how you think this bag toss game started. We personally prefer the story of the German Farmer as it would make more sense to see people throwing rocks in a hole and create a game around it rather than just saying Cincinnati started and have no proof behind it. But if you have your own story that we haven't mentioned above, let us here your side and we will post it for people to read.

One other History Lesson

5. How the cornhole bags were created
Originally the bags were filled with actual corn, which gave the name cornhole. The only problem was that when these bags got wet, the bean bags would instantly be ruined. After spending enough money buying bags again and again, someone finally came up with the idea to create weather proof bags filled with plastic pellets.
